Save Money and The Earth By Going Green In Your NW Washington DC Home

Working with a green builder is a great start to creating an eco-friendly home in the Palisades area of Washington DC, but after the home is built, then what should you do? Making the decision to reduce your impact on the environment begins with construction of the home, but then is carried throughout the home from furnishing to utilities.

  • Energy Efficient Light Bulbs: Rather than stocking your shelves and lamps with traditional light bulbs, instead choose the energy efficient models that look like soft serve ice cream cones. They require only a fraction of the electricity to operate – reducing your electric bill – and need replacing about every 7 years. The replacement rate alone makes your home more eco-friendly and will make your green contractors proud.
  • Reduce the amount of water your household uses. As part of the green design plan of your home, ensure all water faucets and toilets are energy efficient. Even slipping an empty plastic bottle in the tank of your toilet will reduce the amount of water used with every flush to the bare minimum.
  • Forget the hot water when washing laundry and go straight to the cold water wash and rinse. Not only will you protect your clothing from fading, you will reduce the amount of energy used to repeatedly operate the hot water heater. Consider putting your clothes outside on a clothesline instead of the dryer when possible. These small changes can go a long way in furthering your commitment to building a home with a green builder.
  • Plant some trees around your home. While you may not receive the immediate benefit of shade from trees, you will see a dramatic difference throughout the years in your Northern Virginia home.
